From an Unexpected Opportunity to a Lasting Sisterhood - Nicole Martin
Member Monday Spotlight: Nicole Martin
Sometimes, the best career opportunities are the ones you never see coming. For Nicole Martin, a conversation between her roommate and a coworker opened the door to an industry she quickly fell in love with.
Today, Nicole is a DOT Project Manager at Capital Paving & Construction, Co-Chair of the Women of Asphalt Missouri Branch, and Chair of WofA's National Mentorship Committee, helping other women find their own paths and build meaningful connections across the industry.
Nicole's journey began while she was working for a small engineering firm. Her roommate, who worked at Capital Paving & Construction, learned that the company's QC Director was looking for someone to join the quality control department. As luck would have it, Nicole had a degree in exactly the field they needed! Her roommate passed along her résumé, and Nicole was hired the following week. "I fell hard for the industry the moment I stepped in," Nicole shared.
What keeps her passionate about asphalt? The opportunity to tackle new challenges, continue learning, and work alongside people who support her growth.
"I enjoy that no one day is the same. Every day is different, whether it be tackling an unexpected challenge or learning a completely new scope, it will always keep you on your toes."
Nicole is also quick to recognize the men she works alongside at Capital, sharing that they have always been among her biggest supporters. That same appreciation for supportive relationships extends beyond her day-to-day work. Through Women of Asphalt, Nicole has found a community that has become much more than a professional network.
"Women of Asphalt is a sisterhood of inspiring women you didn't know you needed until you get here."
Today, she helps foster that same sense of community as Co-Chair of the Missouri Branch and Chair of WofA's National Mentorship Committee, connecting women with opportunities to learn, grow, and support one another.
For Nicole, the true value of WofA goes beyond encouraging and educating women about careers in asphalt. It's about building lasting friendships with women who are there for each other, both professionally and personally. "Knowing you have these women in your corner is an unmatched empowering experience."
Her advice to anyone considering a career in asphalt is just as enthusiastic as her own introduction to the industry. "GO FOR IT! Do not let fear of the unknown hold you back. Trust yourself and trust God."
From an unexpected opportunity in quality control to helping lead mentorship efforts nationwide, Nicole's journey is a reminder that one opportunity can open the door to a career, a community, and the chance to make a lasting impact on others.
Building the Future
Nicole's commitment to Women of Asphalt extends from her home state of Missouri to women across the country.
Through her leadership with the Missouri Branch, she's helping strengthen local connections and create opportunities for women in the industry. As National Mentorship Committee Chair, she's also helping bring mentors and mentees together to share knowledge, build confidence, and develop relationships that support long-term career growth.
Nicole is a wonderful example of what makes the Women of Asphalt community so special. She's taken the connections and support she's found through WofA and turned them into opportunities to lift up others. Her enthusiasm, generosity, and willingness to lead embody the spirit of our sisterhood.
